September 4, 2018
Labor Day is a celebration of the meaning and ability of labor in America. In agriculture, harvest time is the celebration of labor and management. Hard work and long hours have combined all season long with management and knowledge to bring a crop to harvest and the year's reward. The productivity of American agriculture is an amazing success story that continues to draw attention from around the world.
The combination of good soils, adequate water resources in most areas, expert farmers, leading edge research, and top tier equipment has helped U.S. agriculture feed the world. While total inputs (feed, seed, fertilizers, machinery, labor) have remained about constant since 1948, total output has grown from a base of 100 to over 250.
Productivity gains in crop production have partially been capitalized into land values. The more productive the land, the greater the yield, and the higher the income generated from each acre. Therefore, each acre of land has more value because of the growth in productivity and income potential. Land is a long term investment and as demand continues over the upcoming decades to grow more food, fuel, and fiber, agricultural land in the U.S. has a good future.
